Early History:
Activated 19 June 1942 at MacDill Field Florida. Trained there with B-26 aircraft.
Moved to Drane Field, Florida in late September 1942. Ground unit sent to the
port of embarkation on the 23rd November 1942 and sailed on the Queen Elizabeth
on the 24th of November 1942, and arrived in Greenock on the 30th of November
1942. The aircraft moved to the United Kingdom via southern ferry route. The
450 BS departed final processing at Morrison Field on the 6th of February 1942,
and arrived in Bury St. Edmunds on the 7th to the 9th of March 1943. The 452nd
BS departed on March 1943. the 451st departed in April 1943, and the 449th BS
in April 1943. The last aircraft arrived in Bury St. Edmunds on the 29th of
May 1943.
Subsequent History:
Assigned to the 9th AF, IX BC on 16 October 1943. Moved to France in September
1944 and to Germany after the cessation of hostilities. The unit returned to
the US on December 1945, and inactivated. Unit was activated again as a Tactical
Air Command fighter unit in 1954. First aircraft assigned were F-86s and later
upgraded to F-100s, but only in existance for a few years.
